Rothenburg ob der Tauber along the romantic road in Bavaria is a lovely place to spend the afternoon. It was full of Americans and being one I didn’t mind but if you were looking for Germans you would be disappointed. We ate at a cute tavern and the couple next to us had been at Oktoberfest and shared their favorite beer and other recommendations with us (Yeah Prescott, Arizona!).
As any self-respecting German town, Rothenburg has a wonderful glockenspiel and many fine buildings rehabilitated after the war. With its dark Nazi history the city certainly puts on a cheery face and appears to be straight out of a child’s nutcracker fantasy. Käthe Wohlfahrt has several Christmas shops and a museum off the main square which draw a crowd.
